The United States is struggling with an epidemic of anxiety. Now the most-cited mental stressor faced by American adults and adolescents alike, one could accurately say the U.S. is facing an epidemic of anxiety, a critical mental health issue that is widespread yet which does not have good treatment options.

For the millions of Americans who struggle with anxiety and do not want to take prescription drugs, could something else in the individual’s life be causing or simply exacerbating the anxiety? Is it possible that lack of sleep may create or worsen anxiety?

Anxiety and Sleep

The American Sleep Foundation cites anxiety and sleep as being intimately connected. Often in a vicious cycle, lack of sleep, and sleep problems can produce anxiety symptoms, making it more difficult to fall asleep at night, thusly perpetuating the problem. Quoting the research:[1]

“Anxiety is frequently connected to sleeping problems. Excess worry and fear make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. Sleep deprivation can worsen anxiety, spurring a negative cycle involving insomnia and anxiety disorders.”

What is the Scope of Anxiety in America?

Anxiety is often described as a “sleeper illness” because it is one of America’s most common health afflictions. Yet, it is not often discussed or prioritized in a way that is proportional to the widespread nature of the crisis. Anxiety is something that virtually every human being feels at some point in their life. Further, millions of Americans struggle with chronic anxiety. According to a survey published by Single Care:[2]

  • 62% of Americans surveyed said they experience some degree of anxiety.
  • 31% of Americans surveyed cited symptoms that meet the criteria for chronic anxiety.
  • About 20% of the adult population struggles with anxiety, with specific phobias that cause anxiety being the most common type of anxiety cited amongst the affected population.
  • Roughly 63% of people who struggle with anxiety are women, whereas 37% are men.
  • Research suggests anxiety is increasing, not just in the U.S. but worldwide. The data indicates anxiety rates are up 50% from 1990 to 2013.
  • While mental illness is often under-discussed or even ignored in the U.S., public health surveys show anxiety is the most frequently cited mental struggle for American adults, with at least 40 million Americans over 18 saying they struggle with anxiety.
  • Anxiety looks very different from one person to the next. According to research, 19 million adults experience specific phobias, 15 million adults have social anxiety, 7.7 million adults have PTSD, 6.8 million adults have generalized anxiety, and 6 million adults have panic disorders.

A Good Night’s Sleep Could Reduce Anxiety Levels

Irritability, lack of energy, dulled cognitive function, and slowed reaction time are all side effects of lost sleep. Each side effect can contribute to existing anxiety and produce previously nonexistent anxiety. Rather than medicating oneself with potentially habit-forming prescription drugs, why not tackle the problem by taking a natural sleep aid?

Immune Solution’s founder, Jackie Page, formulated a unique 100% Natural Sleep Aid using Ayurvedic proprietary medicinal techniques. In Jackie’s own words:

“It is recommended adults (ages 18-60 years) sleep at least 7 hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Proper good sleep is a pillar of health, improving immune health, brain performance, positive mood, hospitable nature, stress reduction, and even weight control. Not getting enough quality sleep regularly raises the risk of many diseases & disorders, ranging from heart disease & stroke to dementia & obesity. The body’s ability to function declines if achieved sleep isn’t in the 7-8 hour range. That said, 35.2% of all U.S. adults report sleeping on average for less than 7 hours per night, meaning more than 1 in 3 are sleep-deprived. Nearly 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder (one or more of 60 classified disorders), with 30% of adults experiencing short-term insomnia.”
