Maximize Serotonin Levels with Kamut Wheatgrass and a Healthy Gut

October 11, 2026Jackie Page

Autumn is upon us, as shown in these beautiful photographs in an idyllic northern setting. Fall is a lovely time of year, but it also signals the end of summer, shorter days, longer nights, and cooler temperatures. For many people, this season signals strong mood changes and the onset of seasonal depression, low morale, anxiety, and other unwanted mental health issues.

But it doesn’t have to be. This month, we at Immune Solution are breaking down the top myths about serotonin, dopamine, and the other chemicals your body produces and needs to feel happy and healthy.

Did you know serotonin is produced primarily in your gut?

Quoting the medical professionals at the Cleveland Clinic:[1]

  • “Most of the serotonin found in your body is in your gut (intestines). About 90% of serotonin is found in the cells lining your gastrointestinal tract. It’s released into your blood circulation and absorbed by platelets. Only about 10% is produced in your brain.”

Also, keep in mind that serotonin is made from an essential amino acid called tryptophan. Because the chemical comes from an essential amino acid, it can’t be made by the human body on its own. It has to be obtained from the foods you eat.

Serotonin is Essential to Mood, Happiness, Morale, and Overall Outlook

Serotonin is produced in the gut, and it is essential because the chemical plays a critical role in regulating mood, emotion, and perspective. Again, quoting the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic:

  • “Serotonin in your brain regulates your mood. It’s often called your body’s natural ‘feel-good’ chemical. When serotonin is at normal levels, you feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier and calmer. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression. Many medications used to treat anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders often target ways to increase the level of serotonin in your brain.”

And that’s just the beginning. Serotonin also plays an essential role in digestion, reducing nausea, regulating sleep, healing wounds, improving blood health, and managing sexual health.

What Happens When Your Brain Does Not Produce Enough Serotonin?

Medical professionals across America warn of physical, mental, and emotional problems that may occur when one’s body is not producing enough serotonin. Some of the health conditions associated with low serotonin levels include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep Problems
  • Mood Problems
  • Suicidal Behavior
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Panic Disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Phobias

This is nowhere near a complete list, but it does show the value of healthy, normal serotonin levels.

Since Serotonin is Produced in the Gut, How Do I Get More Serotonin?

Since serotonin is an amino acid, the body cannot make it on its own. You must consume foods rich in tryptophan, but that is not the only answer. Again, quoting the medical professionals at Cleveland Clinic:

  • “Eating foods high in tryptophan will not necessarily boost serotonin levels on its own. It’s a complex process. Your body needs carbohydrates to release insulin, which is needed to absorb amino acids. Then even if tryptophan does get into your blood it has to compete with other amino acids to get absorbed into your brain. Scientists are still studying how eating tryptophan-containing foods possibly boosts serotonin levels.”

Foods that are high in tryptophan include:

  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Turkey
  • Tofu
  • Pineapples
  • Nuts
  • Oats
  • Seeds

In addition to eating tryptophan-rich foods, one should also:

  • Get more sunlight
  • Exercise more frequently (doctors recommend 30 minutes of cardio five times per week, and two weight-training sessions per week).
  • Take supplements designed to boost serotonin, like tryptophan supplements, probiotics, SAMe, ginseng, St. John’s wort, Syrian rue, and nutmeg.

How Does Gut Health Play a Role in Serotonin?

Each year, scientists and medical experts learn more about the gut’s role in physical and mental health. Again, quoting Cleveland Clinic:

  • “Most of your body’s serotonin is in your GI tract where it helps control your bowel function and plays a role in protecting your gut. Your gut can increase serotonin release to speed digestion to rid your body of irritating foods or toxic products. Serotonin also plays a part in reducing your appetite while eating.”

The healthier the gut, the more likely it is to produce serotonin properly and positively influence your physical and mental health. That’s where Immune Solution’s Raw Organic Kamut Wheatgrass comes into play.
