Americans are getting sicker and sicker, and despite their best efforts, they’re having a difficult time finding solutions that work to improve their health naturally. What could be causing this?
There is still much that is unknown about microplastics. Still, some health professionals, including the natural health researchers and health supplement innovators at Immune Solution, are beginning to draw connections between America’s declining health and the spread of microplastics into the environment, including in the human body.
The Scope of Microplastic Pollution
To put it simply, microplastics are, as the name implies, very tiny plastic pieces. They range in size from 5 millimeters to 1 micron, which, for comparison, is approximately 70 times smaller than a human hair. Microplastics can be tiny fragments of plastic viewable with the naked eye, or they can be tiny fibers or even microscopic particles that require a microscope to view.
How did microplastics get into the environment? One of Immune Solution’s writers and researchers got in touch with a scientist who works in the Midwest, where she analyzes water quality. This scientist indicated that microplastics come from things that are made of plastic and that plastic products are essentially always “shedding” microplastics.
Examples of items that produce microplastics include polyester, fleece, synthetic textiles, rugs, upholstery, frisbees, kayaks, plastic utensils, water bottles, and a range of other common items that shed tiny bits of plastic, known as “secondary microplastics.”
Additionally, it’s essential to note that the U.S. is teeming with what are known as “primary microplastics,” which are intentionally manufactured to be extremely small. A good example are the minuscule, prefabricated plastic pellets called nurdles designed to be easily modified into other products. Styrofoam, paint removers, household and industrial cleaning products, reflective paint, and cosmetics are also good examples of common products that contain primary microplastics.
Microplastics enter the human body through air, food, and water and, once there, are very difficult to remove. Some scientists speculate that humans inhale, ingest, and consume approximately the equivalent of a credit card’s worth of microplastics every week, providing a frame of reference for the pervasive presence of microplastics in the environment.
Studies have found microplastics in human blood, lungs, and even the brain, with some researchers speculating that microplastics are present in the bodies of all Americans, at least to some extent.
Perhaps most unsettling, Smithsonian Magazine reported in February that a study from the Nature Medicine journal found “The human brain may contain up to a spoon’s worth of tiny plastic shards—not a spoonful, but the same weight (about seven grams) as a plastic spoon.” Yikes. Those same researchers also note that “The amount of microplastics in the human brain appears to be increasing over time: Concentrations rose by roughly 50 percent between 2016 and 2024.”
Those findings are just a little bit alarming, to put it mildly.
Is There a Scientific Method for Removing Microplastics from Your Body?
